Naxos: the Greek island that has it all (& fewer crowds)

Naxos stole our hearts in a way we didn’t expect. It’s the perfect mix of a lively town, quiet mountain villages filled with artisans, and beautiful beaches with crystal-clear waters—offering just enough to explore without the tourist crowds of other islands. Renting a car allowed us to roam the rural countryside and discover village after charming village, each with its own character. There’s something about Naxos that feels both expansive and grounded, like you could keep discovering it forever.

Things to do in Naxos

Explore Chora (Naxos Town): Stroll through the lively port and Old Town area, full of charming alleyways, boutique shops, waterfront tavernas, and historic sites. Don’t miss the Temple of Apollo (Portara) at sunset—it’s one of the most iconic views on the island and just a short walk from the harbor.

Rent a car and explore the island: To really experience the full range of Naxos—from the beaches to the mountains—you’ll want a car. The drives are scenic and peaceful, with donkeys along the roadside, olive groves dotting the hills, and farms spread across the countryside.

Spend a day at Plaka Beach: Wide, golden sands and crystal-clear waters make this beach feel like a peaceful escape. You can rent a double bed cabana from Mandala Naxos for a relaxing day by the sea, with drinks and light fare delivered by the nearby Mandalino Food Truck—perfect for a laid-back afternoon.

Swim, snorkel, or kite surf at Orkos Beach: This small, quiet beach is a hidden gem with crystal-clear waters and a peaceful vibe. On calm days, it’s perfect for snorkeling—just grab goggles from a local grocery and spot colorful fish and coral. On windier days, you’ll often see kite surfers making the most of the breeze.

Relax at Maragkas Beach: This stretch of beach has a relaxed, resort-style vibe that’s ideal for families and beach lovers alike. It’s lined with casual restaurants and hotels, and we especially loved dinner at Picasso on the Beach and drinks at Nomad Beach Bar.

Take a scenic drive to Apeiranthos Village: Set high in the mountains, this village feels beautifully untouched and offers a refreshing change of pace from the coast. Its stone architecture, artisan shops, and narrow paths feel like stepping back in time. Buy some beautiful handcrafted pottery at Απείρανθος Art, located on the main lane when you walk in from the parking lot.

Stop in Chalki (Halki): This small mountain village has a peaceful, authentic charm and is a perfect stop on your way back from Apeiranthos. Grab a bite, peek into local shops, and enjoy a slower rhythm of island life.

Hike Mount Zas: Tackle the highest peak in the Cyclades with a hike up Mount Zas, said to be the childhood home of Zeus. The views from the top are breathtaking, and along the way, you’ll pass rocky landscapes, grazing goats, and even the Cave of Zeus—perfect for travelers who want a dose of adventure. There are a few route options depending on your desired activity level, so you can choose the one that fits your pace.

Experience Chora’s nightlife and music scene: Chora has a lively but laid-back nightlife scene, with tavernas and bars often featuring local musicians. Whether it’s traditional Greek folk at Flamingo Bar or retro DJ sets at the lively Swing Bar, there’s something for every vibe once the sun goes down.

Take a day trip to Paros or Antiparos: If you’re based in Naxos, Paros and Antiparos make for easy and rewarding day trips by ferry. Both islands offer their own unique charm: Paros has lively towns and beautiful beaches, while Antiparos is smaller and more relaxed—perfect for a slow afternoon of exploring.

Places to eat & drink in Naxos

Kontos Taverna

This was our favorite dining experience in Naxos—truly an authentic local hangout away from the busier vibe of Chora. From fresh seafood and traditional Greek dishes to homemade pasta, everything we tried was incredible. This spot is a must.

AVATON 1739

Coffee & Wine Roof: This rooftop spot above the Old Town is a total standout, with some of the most unique cocktails we had on the island. Come for the dreamy sunset views, stay for the relaxed music vibes and beautiful setting—it’s the perfect start to the evening.

Picasso on the Beach

This beachfront spot quickly became a favorite: Tasty margaritas, a massive ribeye steak, and fresh, flavorful Mexican dishes all served in a breezy, boho-chic setting. The decor is playful and inviting, making it a fun and relaxed place to unwind by the sea.

Labyrinth Wine Restaurant

Tucked away in a quiet courtyard in the heart of Chora, this spot feels like a hidden escape. The service was incredibly warm and thoughtful, and we enjoyed a spread of small bites and charcuterie paired with a great glass of wine.

Café Ouzeri Giorgos

Tucked into a quiet corner of Apeiranthos, this quaint, family run spot serves traditional Naxian dishes with warm hospitality. It’s the kind of place where you slow down, sip ouzo, and enjoy a homemade meal with a mountain view.

Doukato Restaurant

Nestled in the heart of Chora’s Old Town, this spot is tucked among the windy alleyways and hidden courtyards. You’ll know you’ve found it when you spot the yellow bike. The setting is charming and relaxed, and the menu features classic Greek dishes made with fresh, local ingredients.

ArtoViglismata Bakery

We were staying nearby in the off-season (October), and this quickly became our morning ritual. Their freddo espresso was amazing, and the case was always full of fresh pastries, savory pies, and sweet treats galore.

Mandalino Food Truck

This laid-back food truck near Plaka Beach serves up tasty sandwiches, wraps, and snacks—perfect for a casual beach bite. You can grab something to go, or have it delivered straight to your cabana if you’re lounging at Mandala Naxos.

Flamingo Restaurant

A longtime Naxos favorite, Flamingo offers classic Greek dishes in a lively setting. In the evenings, they often have traditional Greek music and dancing—it’s just as fun to watch as it is to join in.

For a truly special experience, consider booking Private Chefs Naxos for an in-villa meal.

Flora, the coordinator, is wonderfully kind and incredibly communicative—she made the entire process seamless from start to finish. For our group of friends, Chef Joseph (who has trained in Michelin-starred kitchens) prepared a stunning multi-course Greek feast using fresh, local ingredients, while his assistant chef, Dimitra, was equally amazing and attentive. Whether you’re celebrating something special or just want a relaxing night in, this is an unforgettable way to enjoy Naxos from the comfort of your villa.

Need to know

A few tips for making the most of your time in Naxos:

  • Renting a car is highly recommended if you want to explore beyond the main town. Driving is easy and safe, and it’s the best way to visit the mountain villages, hidden beaches, and beautiful countryside at your own pace.

  • Be open to staying outside of Chora. While the main town is lively and walkable, there are magnificent hillside villas scattered around the island that offer peace, privacy, and sprawling views—perfect for a more immersive and relaxing experience. And it’s a short, traffic-free drive into town.

  • Naxos has a more relaxed, authentic vibe than islands like Santorini or Mykonos, so lean into the slower pace. Many spots operate seasonally, so if you’re visiting in the off-season (like October), expect quieter beaches and limited hours in some smaller villages—though Chora remains fairly active year-round.

  • And don’t forget: Naxos is a great base for day trips to nearby islands like Paros and Antiparos. A short ferry ride can give you a taste of their unique character while still keeping Naxos as your peaceful home base.
